LLEWELLYN BOTHA
While practising as an attorney, Llewellyn read for a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Geography at the University of South Africa. After some twenty years in private legal practice, he pursued his interest in environmental matters at the University of Cape Town where, in 1988, he obtained a Master of Arts degree in Environmental Science. The focus of his research for that degree was South African legislation dealing with urban solid waste.
Llewellyn undertook further research and was employed at the University of Cape Town, the Cape Town City Council and as an independent consultant. The focus of this work was on the legal aspects of environmental issues such as waste and pollution and the application of environmental policies by local authorities and businesses. Llewellyn has also contributed to Environmental Management in South Africa, a standard reference work edited by RF Fuggle and MA Rabie. |

KARLI MACKINTOSH
Karli lived in Tokyo, Japan for thirteen years prior to returning to Cape Town in 1996 to study at the University of Cape Town. She holds a Bachelor of Social Science degree and a Bachelor of Law degree, for which she completed her final year research paper in Environmental Law, focusing on the transboundary movement of hazardous wastes.
She completed her articles at Bowman Gilfillan in Johannesburg and was admitted as an attorney in May 2005. In October 2005 she returned to Cape Town to pursue her interest in Environmental Law and to join The ELC.
Karli completed a Master’s degree in Environmental and Marine Law at UCT in 2007. She has a particular interest in waste management in the context of environmental fiscal reform and completed her LLM dissertation on this topic.

EMMA SMITH
Emma first joined The ELC in 2001 while studying part-time for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Management. She completed the degree and, in 2004, took up fulltime study at the University of Cape Town. There, Emma completed an Honours degree in Geographical Information Systems and a Master’s degree in Sociology, with her minor dissertation addressing "Recent Spatial Trends in Post-Fordist Cape Town".
Emma returned to The ELC in the middle of 2007 and has continued her work in monitoring new legislation and updating clients’ legislation registers. She is also involved in the preparation of our monthly reports detailing the actual and proposed changes to the legislation.
