The Environmental Law Consultancy (“The ELC”) exists to service the need for a single agency which has an understanding of, and expertise in, the application of both legal and environmental principles.

As an independent consultancy, The ELC is able to assist clients either directly or via their external environmental management teams.  The focus of The ELC is to assist clients in identifying, setting up and maintaining the legal aspects of environmental management systems (such as those for ISO 14001). The ELC has done and continues to do this for several large corporations in South Africa.

With qualifications and experience in Law, in Geography and in Environmental Science, The ELC is able to

• assist and advise on the application of environmental management principles
• assist and advise on the application  and interpretation of the law applicable to environmental management
• liaise with lawyers, environmental managers, local authorities and industry, especially in areas of common environmental concern, and
• service the needs of parties wanting to keep abreast of changes in environmental law.

The ELC was established in September 1991 to assist businesses, organisations and individuals with the law and related issues affecting environmental management in South Africa.  It was the first such consultancy to be established in South Africa.
